Fun and Easy Roller Hockey Drills to Get You Ready for the Season!

by Stephen Cabral

The new Roller Hockey season is coming; now is the perfect time to start practicing! These fun and easy drills will help you sharpen your skills so you can roll when the season begins.

1. Stickhandling Drills

Now that you can get outside, it's the perfect time to work on your stickhandling and control the puck on the go. See here for more drills!

  • Around the World: Grab your stick and a puck or ball. Move around your body in a big circle while you can begin to walk or roll to increase difficulty. Try to get faster without losing control.
  • Toe Drag Challenge: Set up two objects (like cones or pucks) about 2-3 feet apart. Practice dragging the puck between them from one side to the other.
  • One-Handed Practice: Try moving the puck around with just one hand. This will help you protect it in tight spots during a game.

2. Shoot Like a Pro: Target Practice

Practice outside to prepare your shooting skills for the season. Tim Turk has helpful videos here.

  • Target Practice: If you have a net, set up in front and start firing shots. Aim for the corners and work on your accuracy. If you don't have a net, make your targets—use cones, chalk, or even tape a square onto a wall to aim.
  • Different Shots: Work on your forehand, backhand, and one-timer shots. Challenge yourself by picking specific spots to hit and mix up your shot types to be ready for any in-game situation.

3. Get Moving on Your Skates

With the season coming up, it's time to get your legs ready with some skating practice! Check out some drills by Coach Jeremy from How to Hockey!

  • Long-Distance Skating: Pick a long route and skate for a distance. The goal is to keep a steady pace and focus on smooth, controlled strides. This helps build stamina and prepares you for longer shifts on the Rink.
  • Sprint Sessions: Find a smooth stretch of pavement and set up a start and finish line. Race from one end to the other as fast as possible, then take a quick break before doing it again. This will help build speed and endurance for the game.

4. Hockey IQ: Be Smart on the Rink

Being a great roller hockey player is not only about your skills on the Rink; it's also about being smart on the ice!

  • Watch Some Games: Watch roller hockey games online and observe how the players move, pass, and position themselves. This will give you ideas for when you're at the Rink!
